FAQ
What makes your clothing line eco-friendly?
We recycle and repurpose old bedspreads, table linens, jeans and any other fabulous materials that we love. It is estimated that 7% of all landfill material is discarded fabric. Reusing vintage fabrics gives these fabulous textiles the chance to be something new again, thus keeping it out of the landfill.
We use felt made from recycled plastic bottles. Now that you know your water bottle can be recycled into an adorable shirt for your little one, don't you want to make sure that your empty water bottle makes it to a recycling bin?
All of our t-shirts are offered on 100% organic cotton.
Why use authentic vintage fabrics?
Using authentic vintage fabrics, ensures uniqueness of each piece. Each of our Chenille dresses are one-of-a-kind, no two are exactly alike. And as they say, "They just don't make 'em like they used to." Vintage chenille is just not the same as reproduction chenille. Once you have felt the difference, you will understand. Vintage materials are extra soft from all the years of washing. They never fade, shrink, or pill.
Why should I buy clothing made from repurposed fabric?
Every time you purchase a clothing item that has been made from repurposed fabric, you are saving the environment from more pesticides, chemicals, and dyes used to produce new fabric. You are helping reduce the pressure on our overburdened landfills every time you recycle. Repurposing fabric is a way of recycling without extensive processing. Old dresses, jeans, bedspreads, sheets, pillowcases, etc. can be made into spectacular new clothes.
What is the history behind vintage chenille?
Chenille is french for "caterpillar." It is generally used to describe a fabric with tufted pile or raised yarn threads. The technique was developed by a young woman named, Catherine Evans Whitener, in the 1890's. The process became very popular during the Great Depression as a means to bring extra income to struggling farm families. The families would hand stitch the colorful designs onto bedspreads that were then sold in popular department stores, such as Sears Roebuck, and Spiegel. If you would like to see actual department store advertisements for these fabulous spreads from 1934-1972 catalogs, visit the Murray County Museum website at http://www.murraycountymuseum.com/ec.html. You may even recognize some of the designs in our clothing line. Remember, our clothes are made from authentic vintage fabrics.
At Regal Cottage Kids, we think Catherine Evans Whitener would be proud to see the transformation of her invention into our breathtaking chenille dresses!
Do clothes made from vintage fabrics require special washing instructions?
Regal Cottage Kids clothing is designed with durability in mind. We recommend machine washing in cold water and tumble dry on low temperature for all of our items just to be on the safe side. Special care is really not required. Some of our customers have reported that their Regal Cottage Kids items have been passed down from kid to kid and are holding up like new!
The vintage fabrics that we select for our products are chosen very carefully. They must be machine washable and ready to stand up to the toughest kid. Vintage chenille requires fluffing in the dryer to maintain its softness. Don't worry the dryer is good for our chenille dresses, just don't over do it.
